3. Can there be an argument in favor of the death penalty as a necessary adjunct to justice? And if so, how does one define the purpose of justice itself?

Revenge is the one thing that should absolutely not play a role in Justice. I believe this as firmly as I believe anything. As for what justice is, see Republic, The.

Not what Plato thinks! What YOU think! If justice isn't about revenge (which I whole-heartedly agree with you on) then what? Prevention? Reform? Or is it some higher purpose of simply "what's right?" If that, then where does the authority for what is right come from?

Oh ho! But I wasn't pointing you to Plato to imply that he had the answer. Rather I was indicating how insanely intractable that question has proven to pretty much everyone forever. If I had to make a few stabs I would give the following as being involved in justice: Reciprocity, uniformity, predictibility, acknoledgement of people as rational, yet passionate beings.
